Thought I would include it at the right place.

Sandip Bramhe
Jul 27 (5 days ago)

to me
Dear Mr Bhatt,

Kudos to you!

I chanced upon your blogs (#19 & 21) and it was a wonderful read, especially myself being a part of the same fringe group, so to say, that is Maharashtrian Deshastha Bramhin from Varanasi. Though for last almost 35 Yrs I am staying outside Varanasi. I could relate to most of the stories, now almost a part of folklore, narrated by you in your blog, which I had heard from my father and other senior members of the family. I would like to give little additional Information:
1. The big premise next to Liluah Railway Station was known as “Bhatt Badi” (House of Bhatt’s) after famed Bhatts of Burdwan, no knowledge about its present status. I have distinct memories of the place as my maternal grandfather was also staying there, who was Bhandari, connected to Biharsharif. Our family also stayed in Liluah for a brief period. I started my schooling there before shifting to Kolkata and subsequently to Varanasi, which was place of my paternal grandfather, and completed my schooling there. Subsequently I completed my Engg from NITK and PG from IIT Delhi and working with an Oil PSU.
2. I recall around that time Kolkata and suburbs had few other Maharashtrian Brahmin families with the surnames like Bhatts, Shuklas, Bhandaris, Pathaks and ours Bramhe, all of them had allegiance either with Biharsharif/Gazipur or Varanasi. The families with Biharsharif/Gazipur connection spoke Se-Pe, which is what I was told the language is known as. Later during my stay in Mumbai I learnt that the language is still alive and kicking around Nashik / Jalgaon and known as Ahirani. Those who belonged to Varanasi, spoke Banarsi Marathi which was heavily influenced with local Hindi. I had the privilege of learning both the languages as my maternal side spoke se-pe, while my paternal side Banarsi Marathi. A part of Varanasi Maharashtrians also made Lucknow as their base. Most of the marriages remained within these groups and it was not uncommon to find that you happen to be related to both bride and groom due to close knit nature of these families. The marriage scene started changing later with easy mobility. Slowly marriages started happening between the families settled in MP and Maharashtra.

Your blog has prompted me to think and find out more details about my lineage, which I was not bothered till date but just for the posterity, we owe it to the next generation.

Finally, could you make it to Baglan? and what was your finding. A moving book indeed. What I feel is that the Marathas could have easiy won if they had not got with them the ladies, pandits, astrologers and worst a gang of loafers who just wanted to see the North and its pilgrim centres after the battle was won by the Marathas of which they were sure.
Probably the Marathas could have moved for the kill much earlier than dilly-dallying.
The other remarkable thing is the weepy nature of the Marathis. Everybody cries, and worst, keeps on crying. Is it such a weepy kaum?
Are you not on Facebook or gmail? Our original surname was Baglankar after the taluqa in Nashik district, which was later changed to Bhatt or Bhattji (the Brahman who does puja for you). Yes, the Shankaracharya (ADI) took a lot of Maharashtrian Brahmans to the Himalayas when he established one of the four maths at Joshimath.Anand Kumar Bhatthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02781586746323815593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8144756335473827193.post-59165945764264445642009-09-02T22:58:50.418-07:002009-09-02T22:58:50.418-07:00My neighbour in Rishikesh, happens to be an Atreya...My neighbour in Rishikesh, happens to be an Atreya of UP (now settled in Meerut), who mentions that they are originally Atre of Maharashtra. He happened to remark that all the Joshis of UP are Maharashtrian Brahmins. This is also true of the Joshis of Pashupatinath, Kathmandu. Wonder if you are related to the Bhatts of Kashmir. The Bindumadhav (Vishnu) Temple was considered the wealthiest of Varanasi temples, and much of its old glory was destroyed by Aurangzeb. This temple is now in the Patwardhan family, originally from Maharshtra. Nearly all the Varanasi ghats were built by Maratha rulers. Shindes (Scindias of Gwalior) hailed from Satara, and the late Mahavrao, MP, had visited the native village with great fanfare in the late 90s. Sharing your blog url with friends in Maharashtra. P.S.: The fair-skinned, hazel eyed Konkanastha Chitpavan Brahmins of Maharashtra, the Peshwas and their descendants, claim to be shipwrecked European Jews in their family genealogies to this day! It was Shivaji who was responsible for zeroing in on their administrative and financial skills and giving them an honoured place in his administration. The Pants, Dikshits are from Maharashtra. As also Vijayalakshmi Pandit's in-laws, the Pandits of Konkan, who are Saraswat. Wish you success in your further research on your genealogy. It would be fascinating to know its result.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15291522460292612578noreply@blogger.com
